Information for Patients

Who is a Pain and Musculoskeletal  Medicine Consultant?

In the United Kingdom, all Consultants in Pain Medicine/Management are also consultants in Anaesthesia. Pain Medicine Consultants are therefore double – certified both by the Royal College of Anaesthetists and then by the Faculty of Pain Medicine. We adhere to the highest quality standard of patient care. In fact the Pain Fellowship in the UK is the only fellowship program which emphasizes on good technique and skill provision for examination of back and neck pain and performing spinal injections such as facet joint injections, epidural steroid injections, nerve blocks at the cervical, thoracic and lumbar levels and radiofrequency (Rhizolysis) treatments. Therefore Pain Consultants are much more experienced and familiar in diagnosing, investigating and treating spinal pain (back and neck pain) and are also experts in managing nerve pain arising from a variety of reasons.

Dr. Ravindran has been mentored by world-class pain physicians in London, Stanmore and Oxford, trained in one of UK’s leading interventional pain fellowships (University College London). Why is this so important? The Royal College of Anesthetists and the Faculty of Pain Medicine are both governing organisations that certify consultants by proving and demonstrating competency in that specific medical field. Consultants seeking fellowship must demonstrate their ample knowledge, judgment and clinical skills among other attributes, while also showing that they can serve as an expert in matters related to pain management and anaesthesia. In addition, Dr. Ravindran has also been certified by the World Institute of Pain and awarded the Fellowship in Interventional Pain Practice (FIPP) after a rigorous written, practical and oral examination. He has also completed his certification in Musculoskeltal Medicine and awared the Diploma by the British Institute of MSK Medicine after another rigorous written, practical and Oral examination. He is also certified in Ultrasound by the European Society of Regional Anaesthesia.

By being triple- certified, we are proving to you, our patients, that we are knowledgeable, experienced and proficient in our field. Dr. Ravindran has further honed his skills by working with and observing other world-class pain physicians in Cleveland Clinic (USA), National Refractory Angina Centre (Liverpool) and Great Ormond Street Hospital (London).

About pain management (INFORMATION FOR PATIENTS)
Pain serves a useful purpose in our survival because it alerts us to illness or injury. But pain that goes on for a long time (chronic pain) is another matter.

Sometimes there is a clear cause such as arthritis, cancer, a back injury  or post-operative pain after surgery. In other cases, however, people find that no one has been able to explain the reason for their pain. Chronic pain can have a negative influence on your quality of life, affecting not only your physical health but also your emotional well being, your employment and your family. Fortunately, there are many methods to control pain and help you get back to a fulfilling lifestyle. Pain management takes a holistic view, treating the whole person with a combination of methods that suit the individual best. Some of the treatments available from Berkshire Pain Clinic include:

  • Nerve blocks
  • Spine (epidural) injections and infusions
  • Joint injections
  • Muscle injections
  • Prolotherapy (a new type of injection for pain)
  • Medication, including intravenous pain control if needed
  • Nerve destruction (radiofrequency denervation or rhizolysis)
  • Electrical stimulation (PENS and TENS)
  • Exercises and physiotherapy

Counselling and Support

Many people with chronic pain also benefit from counselling or joining a support group involving other people with similar experiences. This helps you to address the very strong emotional impact of ongoing pain. And it equips you to manage your condition on your own terms, so that you take control of the pain, instead of having the pain control you. We can also arrange this important aspect of your treatment.
